Elmira Hay and Straw Auction Continues Successful Record

Sales of dry hay and straw have been strong at the Elmira Produce Auction Co-operative so far this year.
One grower at the July 24 sale said he was happy with the selling price of his dry hay as well as the efficiency of the auction.
“It’s our first time here, we have some hay in the storage here. We need to get rid of and we thought it was a great opportunity to try out the auction.”

Farmers selling hay and straw are asked to arrive at 9 a.m .to allow time for registration for a prompt auction start time at 10 a.m.
Approximately 50 per cent of the hay and straw is sold to farmers within a a 20 kilometre radius as bedding and feed for their livestock. The rest is sold to farmers at a greater distance or to dealers purchasing for their personal market.
The auction has been going on for almost 10 years and continues to be a rising success.
The prices were higher earlier in the spring as growers were short on hay from the wet spring, said one man who was helping with registration.
There were 600 large round bales of first cut hay on offer at the July 17 sale with prices ranging between $28 and $60 per bale, and seven to 10 cents per pound. Large square straw bales sold for $91 each, averaging 13 cents per lb.
